The Role – Part-time Controller

We are looking to source a permanent part-time Controller. Initially, the Company sees the requirement for two full days per week. Depending on activity levels, this may need to be adjusted, at which time a re-assessment of compensation and duties will be addressed.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting operational functions
- Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
- Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
- Coordinating activities of external auditors where necessary
- Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
- Managing the budget process
- Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes
- Evaluating accounting and internal control systems
- Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database as needed
- Developing and monitoring business performance metrics
- Overseeing regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning and compliance
- Hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff
- Preparing transfer pricing documentation and ensuring reporting is consistent with stated policy
- Account for foreign currency gains/losses and translation of USD denominated financial statements of related companies
- Assistance in and/or preparation and submission of various Canadian governmental filings (ie. GST, T5’s, T4’s, instalments, etc)
- Assisting in the preparation of applications and on-going reporting thereon of specific government grant programs in the publishing industry
- Prepare and file various U.S. State franchise tax filings and reporting
- Candidates must also have experience with the preparation of consolidated financial statements involving several inter-related companies with cross-border operations

Qualities of Successful Candidate

- Chartered Professional Accountant with a minimum of 10 years experience as a Controller or similar role
- Comfortable working in a family owned and operated business
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Focus on attention to detail with strong analytical skills
- Able to multi-task on a daily basis
- Work with junior staff and all other personnel in the Company in a respectful, professional manner


Compensation will be market for role and responsibilities. The Company is flexible on the form of employment arrangement. For the ideal candidate, the company would entertain either a part-time employee or a consultant agreement. The ultimate compensation would be a function of the arrangement. A competitive compensation would be offered in either scenario.
