Under the direction of the Site/Parent Coordinator, the Group Leader is responsible for leading a group of approximately 15 students during the three hour program.
Students will be grouped according to reading ability with a potential mix of grade-levels in each group.
The Group Leaders is responsible for effective classroom management and delivering a variety of lessons and academic support to their students in the program.
They will teach a one hour academic lesson from a prepared curriculum focused on reading skills and comprehension.
They will also be responsible for a one hour enrichment lesson, either teaching a lesson from prepared material or supervising their group when an outside partner comes to work with the students.
Enrichment lessons will include topics such as character education, service learning, physical education, STEM, arts and music.
Group Leaders will assist students with homework for thirty minutes.
They will also supervise their students during snack and during physical activity.
Group leaders will provide opportunities for students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth. Additionally,
Group Leaders are required to attend monthly professional developments in order to best serve their students.
This is a part-time position of 3.25 hours daily Monday to Friday, for a total of 16.25 hours per week.
The MSC Program runs for 3 hours immediately following dismissal at each school. Below are the times for MSC at each site:
MSC- Commodore John Rodgers: 3:00pm to 6:00pm (Mon-Thu) & 1:30-4:30 (Fri)
MSC- John Ruhrah: 2:30pm to 5:30pm (Mon-Fri)
For this position you will be required to arrive either 15 minutes before the start of the program at the site or stay 15 minutes later for a total of 3.25 hours a day.
Pay: $17 per hour.
Education/Knowledge: Formal working knowledge equivalent to an Associate’s degree (2 years college) preferred.
Education Discipline: Child development, Education, or a closely related field preferred.
Experience: Working with children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade preferred.
Competencies and Skills:
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred but not required
Engages children in group and individual activities
Effectively manage student behavior in the classroom
Builds relationships to ensure success of students
Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
Possesses knowledge of positive youth development practices
Teaches a one hour reading lesson from a prepared curriculum.
Teaches a one hour enrichment lesson from a prepared curriculum or supervises students while an outside partner teaches the lesson.Is responsible for after school program activities
Ensures the safety and good behavior of the group through positive effective behavior management
Consistently communicates with the MSC Site/Parent
Coordinator on the progress and needs of the students and participates in a team approach to communicating with parents and teachers.
Communicates with school day teachers regularly on the needs and progress of students
Participates in professional development and project-related trainings as assigned
Ability to prepare student assessments and reports on a regular basis
Follows the program’s daily schedule as created by the MSC Program Coordinator and MSC Site/Parent Coordinator
