I am a second year student in the Masters of Architecture program at the University of Calgary. Prior to pursuing my passion for architecture and design full-time, I worked in cancer immunology since my background is in microbiology. My job also enabled me to combine my passion for design. During my time at the BC Cancer Agency I designed the new website for my research team(www.bbrsbiobanking.ca), and used my graphic design skills to help with our re-branding strategy. I also served as lead graphic designer for Vancouver Island's Almost Free Magazine while also working as a research assistant. I was responsible for the layout and the overall look of the magazine, as well as designing ads for clients.
As a research assistant I acted as an effective liaison between patients, clinicians, and researchers, and a keen collaborator in a large and varied team whose needs changed on a daily basis. Hence I learned to be adaptable, self-guided, and resourceful. My job required me to focus on long term objectives and time-sensitive immediate ones, and this furthermore strengthened my coordination and multi-tasking skills.
The skills I honed in my former scientific career translate well into my current role as an architecture student. I am rigorous and thorough in the work and research I conduct for each of my projects, yet equally adaptable and creative in finding solutions. Last year, I had the pleasure of learning from professor Alan R. Collyer, principal emeritus at Dialog Architecture, and under his mentorship designed a homeless shelter and bio-recycling high rise electrically powered by algae. This project allowed me to explore my passion for community service, environmental stewardship, and innovative design.
I have also translated several scientific articles from Spanish to English and taught ESL classes for graduate students, since both Spanish and English are my first languages.
