I am a Chemical Engineering (Co-op) graduate from McMaster University and am currently working as an Application Engineer at Lakeside Process Controls. This job is client focused and highly advanced technical and communicative aptitude is an absolute must. Day-to-day I work to provide industry leaders with chemical process solutions involving flow, pressure, and temperature management. I have experience dealing with equipment including control valves, regulators, and measurement instrumentation.
With recent experience as an employee of a small company, I learned about many aspects of business including financial analysis, business management, and technical processes. I gained an appreciation for well-rounded skills and believe I will offer great value for the company.
Previously, I have worked at EnDiligent Inc. as a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) EIT. Projects involved working for companies such as Suncor, Black Velvet Distillery, and Richardson Oilseed. I have been contributing to the company by attending site visits (virtual), discussing facility processes, and exploring potential risk areas. I also assisted with analyzing chemical processes and unit operations and performed material/energy balances to be used in GHG emission calculations. The role also demanded an understanding of current provincial quantification methodologies and regulations to effectively write technical reports such as verification plans and compliance reports.
As a Pulp and Paper Research Associate at McMaster University, I worked on a project for Procter and Gamble (P&G) to improve the wet strength/resiliency of paper hand sheets. Many varieties of pulp fibers (natural and synthetic) were used, and pulping processes were explored. Chemical modifications were performed to impose surface charges and thus polymer adsorption to achieve optimal results. With the use of a lab-scale paper making machine, hundreds of hand sheet variants were produced and prepared for further testing. Testing was conducted with the use of an Instron machine to determine the paper’s mechanical properties. I assisted in the writing of scientific reports and delivery of presentations detailing results and suggestions to the industry partner on a monthly basis. My efforts contributed to the research group’s continued delivery of impressive results which led to further collaborations with P&G.
During my final year Capstone project, I teamed up with six other students to create a chemical process (based on a patent from Xerox) for the production of 10,000 tonnes per year of polyester resin. Both the technical and financial (start-up/operating costs) specifications were successfully met with the innovative use of a specialty Plug Flow Reactor. Additionally, tasks for the project included performing HAZOP, PSV sizing, reactor design, and heat exchanger design. Excellent technical skills were exemplified, and concepts were both visually and contextually articulated during a presentation. Topics such as capital costs, P&ID, component models, and design specifications of the process were presented to classmates, professors, and industry experts.
Another experience I believe sets me apart is my role as a Project Coordinator Co-op student at CIBC. I displayed the ability to effectively manage time and meet the allocated budget by co-planning a corporation wide “Think-Tank” event consisting of about 100 people. This role demanded an aptitude for working independently as well as part of a team by organizing tasks such as: catering service, venue, guest invitations, prizes, and budgeting. During this role, I also displayed impeccable written and verbal communication skills while working on a project to co-lead the restructuring of the on-boarding process for new employees. For this project, I organized and facilitated weekly meetings involving 10 - 12 members. Meeting topics included discussion of individual and project progress, current challenges, future action events, and task delegation.
